LOGI THE NORDIC CHAMPION IN MMA
The Nordic MMA Championship took place last weekend in Denmark, with participants from Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Each country could send one competitor in each weight class. A total of four competitors competed for Iceland and they were all from Mjölnir, but these were Aron Franz Bergmann Kristjánsson in lightweight, Mikael Aclipen in welterweight, Logi Geirsson in middleweight and Júlíus Bernsdorf in heavyweight. Gunnar Nelson, Luka Jelcic and Jeremy Aclipen companied the group for coaching and such.
It would be an understatement that Logi Geirsson did great on his first MMA tournament as he took the gold in his category and became the Nordic champion after a convincing victory over the Norwegian Vebjørn Aunet. All the judges gave Logi the win in all three rounds. This was Logi's debut in MMA and the gold was therefore especially sweet. You couldn't ask for a better start to what will hopefully be a long and successful career. Logi has, however, shown his strength in submission grappling tournaments in Iceland, but he is, among other things, reigning Icelandic champion in his category.
Mikael Aclipen won the silver medal in his category, after a very controversial judges decision loss in the final match against the local Patrick Sandager. Mikael had previously defeated Theo Kolehmainen from Finland with a first-round RNC in the semi-finals.
Julius Bernsdorf also had to settle for silver after losing a referee's decision against the local Jakob Dyrup. The fight took place all standing as they exchanged blows for three rounds and the home fighter won, rightly this time.
Aron Franz did not make it to the finals after losing to the local Sigurd Axel Rømer in the semi-finals, but the fight was won by TKO in the third round.
We Icelanders, on the other hand, can be happy with one gold and two silvers, although we would certainly have liked two golds, since Mikael should have clearly received the judges decision on his side in the final match against the local fighter.
